10.12.2012
The mission of the nonprofit organization, New Approach, Inc. is to promote emerging artists and curators, as well as to encourage public awareness and exposure to unconventional medallic art.
New Approach, Inc. was established by Mashiko Nakashima, who is also the founder and director of the Medialia ... Rack and Hamper Gallery, located in the former Garment District of New York City. The genesis of the non-profit organization New Approach began in 1998 with a joint medallic arts exhibition of students from Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa, and the The University of the Arts, Philadelphia. This collaborative exhibition began at Medialia, then traveled to both schools in Pennsylvania and Lisbon, Portugal, respectively. Subsequently, this project, titled New Ideas In Medallic Sculpture, has evolved into an annual three-university exhibition hosted by The University of the Arts and Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa.
Among the projects of New Approach, Inc. is a medallic sculpture competition for young artists.
The First International Medallic Sculpture Competition for Emerging Artists received its entries in the summer of 2005, and the works, including by KEIICHI AND KYOKO URYU AWARD winner Virág Szabó, were displayed at Medialia Gallery in a February 2006 exhibition.
The Second International Medallic Sculpture Competition for Emerging Artists received its entries in the summer of 2008, and the works, including by KEIICHI AND KYOKO URYU AWARD winner Nicole Vlado, were displayed at Medialia Gallery in a March 2009 exhibition.
