Evgeniya Semenovna Schukina died on 10th October 2012. She worked for the Coin Collection of State Hermitage for 61 years and for 55 of these as curator of medals. She started during the difficult period of post-World-War II reconstruction and came through the times she called herself “iron age”.
E. Schukina after graduating from Leningrad University began her working in the Hermitage under the leadership of Ivan Spasskii (1904-1990), the chief-curator of Numismatic Department.
Schukina made important contribution to Russian and European Medal’s Art and History. Her PHD (1956) was in the field of Russian Medals of 18th century and published in 1962 (Medal Art in Russia in 18th century – in Russian). Her output was also lasting in a series of books (in Russian): Two centuries of Russian Medal (2000), Monograms and signatures on Russian Medals from 18th c. to the beginning of 20th c. (2001), A Medal Series by F.G. Müller in commemoration of the Northern War at the State Hermitage Museum (2006), German Medals of 16th century – the Catalogue of the State Hermitage Collection (2011).
Overall the list of the publications by Shchukina in Russian and foreign scientific editions numbered more than 150.
Dr Evgeniya Schukina was amiable, intelligent and really like as a person. She has always been ready to help, advise and encourage others. Her last work was included as a preface to the Catalogue of Medals in commemoration of the Civil War of 1812 from Pushkin Museum Collection (Moscow), which is in print. |

New Approach, Inc. 2012 Report 10.12.2012 The mission of the nonprofit organization, New Approach, Inc. is to promote emerging artists and curators, as well as to encourage public awareness and exposure to unconventional medallic art.
New Approach, Inc. was established by Mashiko Nakashima, who is also the founder and director of the Medialia ... Rack and Hamper Gallery, located in the former Garment District of New York City. The genesis of the non-profit organization New Approach began in 1998 with a joint medallic arts exhibition of students from Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa, and the The University of the Arts, Philadelphia. This collaborative exhibition began at Medialia, then traveled to both schools in Pennsylvania and Lisbon, Portugal, respectively. Subsequently, this project, titled New Ideas In Medallic Sculpture, has evolved into an annual three-university exhibition hosted by The University of the Arts and Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa. |

Les pièces de monnaie en cuivre émeuvent et fascinent aujourd’hui encore par la beauté qui émane de leurs traits naïfs.
Les hommes ont représenté sur ces pièces leurs dieux et leurs seigneurs, les planètes et les cités, les héros et les légendes. En faisant dialoguer monnaies de cuivre et textes de la littérature occidentale, l’exposition présentée à la Fondation Martin Bodmer laisse entendre les questionnements fondamentaux inscrits silencieusement sur ces modestes objets : affirmation de son identité et confrontation à l’altérité, lien avec le sacré et la foi, questionnement de ses frontières et de sa mortalité, inscription dans la mémoire des hommes, transmission de sa culture et de ses valeurs...
I nvitation au voyage dans l’espace et dans le temps, les monnaies du Ve siècle avant J.-C. au XVe siècle de notre ère esquissent les étapes de près de vingt siècles d’histoire, de la Grèce « inventant » la démocratie à la gloire puis au déclin de Byzance. |

300 Jahre Gothas Münzkabinett 27.12.2012 22-23 November 2012. Tagung des Forschungszentrums Gotha Weltlaeufigkeit und Universalitaet - Muenzkabinette und Numismatik im Zeitalter des Barock. Aus Anlass der Gruendung des Muenzkabinetts auf Schloss Friedenstein vor 300 Jahren widmet sich die Tagung der Rolle der Numismatik und Bedeutung von Muenzkabinetten im Zeitalter des Barock.
Im Jahre 1712 erwarb Herzog Friedrich II. von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg die weithin bekannte und mehr als 18.800 Objekte umfassende Münzsammlung des Fürsten Anton Günther II. von Schwarzburg-Arnstadt für 100.000 Taler. Mit diesem Ankauf hatte die Gothaer Münzsammlung, die heute an die 150.000 Münzen, Medaillen und numismatische Objekte umfasst, ein europäisches Niveau erlangt. Der münz- und medaillenbegeisterte Friedrich löste die „Numismatica“ nun aus dem Kontext der Kunstkammer und richtete ein eigenes Münzkabinett im Ostflügel des Schlosses ein. |

Conference: Greek coins and their images: noble issuers, humble users? 06.09.2012 Conference is organized by the Belgian School at Athens (EBSA) and the French School at Athens (EFA), in collaboration with the ΚΙΚΠΕ, the FRS-FNRS and the University of Liège. The conference will take place in Athens from the 26th to 28th of September 2012 and will be hosted in the auditorium of the French School at Athens.
The goal of the conference will be to discuss and explore the methodologies of reading images on coins while putting in the foreground the role of the “actors” of the issuing process. We insist here on the methodological approach of the conference. |

The catalogue "Universe in miniature" is published 05.09.2012 The Catalogue of engraved stones from the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts comprises 174 intaglios and cameos. Among them Oriental, Classical and European specimens from the Ancient to Modern times. The Museum’s collection of gems has never before been exhibited on this scale and in such a full range. |
