Sylloge nummorum graecorum. Greek coins of Italy and Sicily. By Sergei A. Kovalenko. Rome: «LʼERMA» di BRETSCHNEIDER, 2017

11.07.2017

This volume is continuation of the series of catalogues describing coin collection of the Pushkin Museum in Sylloge format, which begun with publication of the ancient coins of the Black Sea Region (2011, 2014). The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts possesses the third largest numismatic collection in Russia, after the State Hermitage and Historical Museum (Moscow). It is the only museum institution in Russia today, which provides access to its coin collection for the international scholarly community by publishing it in well-established format giving image and detailed description of every coin. Coins of the Greek cities of Italy and Sicily form noticeable part of the collection of the ancient coins in the Pushkin Museum and comprise 766 specimens. Along with ordinary issues there are among them fine and quite rare pieces, which undoubtedly will attract interested attention of both, scholars and coin collectors.

Geld+Kirche - Das Kreuz der Kirche mit dem Geld: neue Ausstellung im Münzkabinett der Stadt Winterthur

Geld+Kirche - Das Kreuz der Kirche mit dem Geld: neue Ausstellung im Münzkabinett der Stadt Winterthur

07.06.2017

30.06.2016

More and more coins can clearly constitute the core of thematic exhibitions, despite their small size and some difficulties due mainly to the public’s unfamiliarity with them. The combination of coins with other artefacts in a symbolic dialogue has much to say to a wide audience.

The exhibition Heads and Tails – Tales and Bodies: Engraving the Human Figure from Antiquity to the Early Modern Period falls within this scope. It focuses on the representation of the human figure on coins and other small coin-shaped artefacts through the ages, from Greek Antiquity to the Early Modern Period. In addition to pieces from the collections of the Pushkin Museum, it includes coins from the Benaki Museum in Athens, as well as from the KIKPE Numismatic Collection, which is kept on loan in the Benaki Museum. With images that usually reflect the trends and achievements of large-scale sculpture, the surfaces of coins, gemstones, medals and the like, have proved to be an extraordinary challenge for engravers and some truly remarkable artworks bear witness to the ways in which the difficulties in rendering (Gr. kallos en smikrō for ‘beauty in small-scale’) can be overcome.

27.12.2012

22-23 November 2012.
